From the Romans to the Renaissance, Rome has played a starring role in many moments in time. It's also the reason behind its fine collection of ancient sites and artistic masterpieces. Long known as the 'Eternal City', Rome is certain to leave a lasting impression on any budding historian, young and old.

Vatican City

The smallest state in the world is in the heart of Rome and packed with must-sees. St Peter’s Basilica and St Peter’s Square, where the Pope holds his audiences, is here. So is Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel with its fabulous frescoes, not to mention some incredible, ancient Egyptian artefacts.

Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is just as impressive as they say it is, with more than a touch of magic about it. It’s a popular spot, so you’ll need to jostle for space to take a photo. Don’t forget to toss in a coin and make a wish – apparently, you should throw with your right hand over your left shoulder.

Iconic gelaterias

Love ice cream? Fassi, on Via Principe Eugenio, claims to be the oldest gelataria in town, while Il Gelato di San Crispino (Via della Panetteria) featured in Eat Pray Love. For modern flavours – sage and raspberry, wasabi – try Gelateria del Teatro (Via di San Simone) and Fatamorgana (off Via del Corso).

Colosseum

When in Rome, the Colosseum is a must-see. One of the city’s most awe-inspiring landmarks, it was once the venue for gladiatorial contests in front of up to 80,000 spectators. These days you can wander around at your own leisure or take a guided tour that includes the underground passageways.

Roman Forum

Gladiator fights, criminal trials, elections – as the epicentre of Roman life, the Forum saw them all. Today you can take a time hop back to those days, wandering around the ruins of ancient monuments. Don’t miss the panoramic view – particularly lovely at sunset – from the Campidoglio.

Villa Borghese

Villa Borghese is the third-largest public park in Rome, and is filled with fountains and lush lawns. A perfect spot for a family picnic, you can stroll, cycle or take a paddle boat out on the lake. Biopark Zoo is also here, with a good roll call of animals including lions, elephants and some mischievous monkeys.
